Why do I need to calibrate Test equipment?

Your instrument could bring up false reading as it experiences normal drift between calibrations or if it is not calibrated.You could also be working with tight tolerances and accurate measurement are key to proper operation of expensive processes or safety systems so you must be certain your reading are accurate.

The key is having an instrument in calibration will allow you to use the instrument with total confidence.

There Is no set answer for calibration frequencies but you should consider the following based on your individual needs. You could calibrate your equipment: based on MFG recommended calibration intervals, before a major or critical measuring project, After a major or critical measuring project, after an event, bia or annually and so forth.

What do you use to calibrate common instruments such as mulitmeters, function generators, power supplies and oscilliscopes?

I use the Fluke 5520A High Performance mulit-product Calibrator with the Scope SC1100 option to calibrate scopes up to 1GHz frequency range
